5.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Brilliant Marriage remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for 1930s melodrama that moves at a breakneck speed, sure, dive in. It’s perfect for people who like their plot twists served with a side of heavy-handed acting.
If you prefer your movies to make sense or have characters who act like actual human beings, you will probably hate this. It’s very dramatic.
The whole setup is one of those classic “your life is a lie” tropes. The socialite girl is just living her best life until a French woman—who honestly seems to have way too much time on her hands—shows up to ruin the party. The reveal that her mom was a murderer feels like it was thrown in just to see what would happen.
Honestly, the pacing is a bit of a disaster. She goes from a high-society darling to a runaway in what feels like five minutes. It’s like the movie was in a huge rush to get to the next scene, so it skipped over all the actual emotional fallout.
It’s funny, I was watching this and thinking about A Poor Girl's Romance. Both movies have that same frantic energy where the lead character is just constantly being pushed around by life, but Brilliant Marriage feels a little bit meaner for no reason.
There’s a moment where she’s staring out a window looking all moody, and the lighting is just so incredibly dramatic it’s almost funny. The cinematographer really wanted us to know she was sad, I guess.
The middle act gets a little bogged down. It feels like they ran out of ideas for how to keep her on the run, so they just throw a few more random characters at her to keep the dialogue going. Sometimes less is more, guys.
By the time we hit the end, I wasn't really sure what the point was. But honestly? It was fine. It’s not going to win any awards, and it’s certainly not as tense as The Edge of the Law, but it occupies the space well enough.
Just don't go in expecting a life-changing experience. Grab a snack, turn your brain off, and watch the chaos happen. 🥂
