5.3/10

A definitive 5.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Broadway Scandals remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
So, Broadway Scandals. If you’re into these old, early talkie musicals, the kind with a bit of backstage drama and a lot of heart on its sleeve, then yeah, give it a whirl. It's not going to blow your mind, but it’s a sweet, if a little predictable, ride. If you need explosions or a super fast pace, you'll probably find yourself checking your watch. 🕰️
The story kicks off with Ted and Mary, a song-and-dance team stuck on the road. Their show goes bust, leaving everyone stranded. It’s pretty clear from the start that Ted, played by Tom O'Brien, is the good guy. He actually dips into his own savings to get the whole crew back to New York. That’s a real stand-up move, something you don't always see. Mary, Sally O'Neil, is his partner, and they have this easy chemistry, the kind that makes you root for them.
They build up a decent act in the city, doing pretty well. Then, Valenska, a big-shot musical comedy queen (Carmel Myers, looking every bit the part), swoops in. She wants Ted for her act, but not Mary. It's one of those classic showbiz dilemmas.
Ted, being the loyal type, refuses. But Mary, who honestly seems to love him deeply, sees this as his big chance. She forces a situation, makes it look like they’re breaking up, so he’ll take the offer. It's a bittersweet moment. You can almost feel her heart breaking as she pushes him away. 💔
Ted does go off with Valenska. He gets his big break, sure, but it quickly turns into him being her "boy-toy." It’s pretty obvious Valenska is using him, not just for his talent. The way she looks at him sometimes, it’s less about partnership and more about possession. It’s a little uncomfortable to watch, honestly.
Fast forward a bit, and Ted and Valenska are opening a huge new show. And who do we see in the chorus? Mary. Just blending in, dancing in the background. It's a powerful visual, seeing her there, so close but so far from him. Valenska, of course, notices and is not happy. Her eyes narrow every time Mary is even remotely near Ted. The tension there is palpable, even if the acting styles are a bit... of their time. 😉
There are some problems, as the plot synopsis mentions. And yeah, there are. The backstage fights feel a bit staged, like they’re trying hard to be dramatic. But you still get invested in whether Mary and Ted will ever get back to their original, simpler dynamic.
One thing I kept thinking about was the title: "Scandals." Are they really scandals? It feels more like good old-fashioned melodrama. Nobody's exactly hiding bodies or anything. More like whispered rumors and hurt feelings. The biggest "scandal" is probably Valenska’s ego. 😂
The musical numbers are what you'd expect. A lot of tapping, some big ensemble pieces. They're fun, if not super memorable. It's the quiet moments between Ted and Mary that really stick. When they first get back to New York, the way they talk about their dreams, it’s really sweet.
I found myself wondering about the extras in the chorus scenes. Some of them look genuinely thrilled to be there. Others, well, they just look like they’re waiting for their lunch break. It adds a certain charm, you know? Like you’re watching a real play unfold, with all its little imperfections.
The film isn't a deep dive into the human psyche. It's a simple, classic tale of love, sacrifice, and showbiz ambition. It’s a good one for a lazy Sunday afternoon, especially if you have a soft spot for the early days of sound film. You won’t be talking about it for weeks, but it leaves a gentle impression.
