3.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 3.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Dodge City Trail remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for B-westerns where everyone wears a hat and speaks in clipped sentences, you'll be just fine here. It’s not breaking any new ground, but it doesn't try to, either. If you hate slow-burn travel movies or need a complex plot to keep you awake, you are probably gonna be bored to tears.
I caught this on a whim, and honestly, it feels exactly like the kind of Saturday matinee stuff you’d stumble across on cable at 2 AM. It’s got that specific, dusty charm that makes you miss movies that were made in three weeks on a shoestring budget.
The whole thing is basically just moving cattle. There’s a lot of walking, a lot of yelling at cows, and the occasional scuffle that clears up as fast as it started. It reminds me a bit of the pacing in The Sheriff, where the environment is really the main obstacle.
There is this one scene where they are just sitting around a campfire, and it goes on for, I don’t know, an eternity? You can literally hear the crickets louder than the dialogue. It felt real, though. Like the actors were actually tired of sitting on those hard logs all day.
Slim is the archetype of the rich kid who thinks he knows everything. You know exactly what’s gonna happen to him. He’s gonna get humbled, maybe get a little dirty, and realize that being a ranch owner’s son doesn't mean much when a stampede is coming your way. It’s not deep, but it works.
I found myself watching the background extras more than the main guys. There's a guy in the back of the second act who looks like he’s trying to hide a laugh during a serious speech about trail danger. It’s the little, messy details like that which make me like these old films more than the shiny, perfect stuff they put out now. 🤠
It’s not trying to be a grand epic. It’s a job, the men do the job, and then the movie ends. There’s a comfort in that, I guess. It’s certainly a change of pace from something like The Kid from Spain, which has all that frantic musical energy. This one just wants to get to Kansas without losing too many cows.
Not a masterpiece. Just a movie that exists, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need on a Tuesday night. Watch it for the hats and the dry humor, don't watch it if you're looking for high art.
