4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Farmer Al Falfa's Birthday Party remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old, scratchy cartoons that feel like they were drawn by someone who hadn't slept in a week, then sure. Anyone looking for a coherent story or actual jokes should probably stay far away. It is mostly just a loud, bouncy mess.
Farmer Al Falfa is basically trying to celebrate his birthday, but everything goes wrong immediately. The animals act like total jerks. The animation is that classic rubber-hose style where limbs turn into spaghetti whenever someone moves too fast.
There is this one moment where a cow starts dancing, and the way its neck moves is just… unsettling. It reminded me a bit of the weird, disjointed energy you see in Alice in Wonderland. Everything feels like it might snap if you look at it too hard.
I am not sure if it was meant to be funny or just deeply chaotic. Most of the "plot" is just animals being mean to an old man. It lacks the charm of later stuff, but it has this weird, frantic pulse.
Sometimes, it feels like the animators were just throwing things at the screen to see what stuck. It lacks the polish of a modern feature, but honestly? I think I prefer the raw, slightly broken feeling of these old shorts. It feels human, even if it is a bit deranged.
Don't look for a lesson here. Don't look for a point. Just watch the cow dance until the frames start to blur together. 🎈
