6.4/10

A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Five Men in a Circus remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel a bit dusty and genuinely weird, give this a shot. People who want polished, high-budget studio comedies should probably look elsewhere. It’s for the folks who find joy in watching a group of guys who are objectively terrible at their jobs try to survive in a chaotic environment.
The premise is simple enough. Five broke musicians—none of whom seem to have mastered their instruments—stumble into a traveling circus. The circus is currently falling apart because all the guys who usually work there are on strike. It's the kind of premise that makes you wonder what everyone was thinking when they signed up for this production.
There’s a real cluttered energy to this film. The circus scenes are cramped, and you can practically smell the sawdust and stale beer through the screen. It’s not elegant, but it’s definitely alive. You get the sense that the director was just trying to keep the camera moving before the whole set collapsed. 🤡
I couldn't help but think about how much this contrasts with the polished chaos in The Piano Mover. While that film has its own brand of absurdity, there’s a grit here that feels more grounded in the real, sad lives of these performers. These guys aren't stars. They’re just loud.
The pacing is a bit of a mess, honestly. It jumps from these high-energy arguments to long, quiet moments where characters are just staring at each other. It reminded me of the rhythm in The Girl with the Hat Box, though this film is much less concerned with looking pretty.
Is the plot thin? Yes. Do I care? Not really. Sometimes you don't need a heavy story if the characters feel like they’ve actually spent time together in a van. You can tell they’re tired. You can tell they’re hungry. That’s enough for me.
If you enjoy watching people fail upwards in the most public way possible, this is your movie. Just don't expect a masterpiece. It's just five guys, a loud trumpet, and a very grumpy circus crowd. Sometimes that’s all you need on a Tuesday night. 🎺
