5.1/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 5.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Found Alive remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Probably not, unless you’re deep into the weeds of pre-code era oddities. If you get a kick out of stiff acting and jungle scenes that were clearly filmed on a backlot somewhere in California, you might find some charm here. Everyone else is going to be checking their watch about twenty minutes in.
The whole thing feels a bit like a fever dream. We’ve got a mother and her butler running off to the jungle because of a divorce—which, sure, that’s a way to handle custody issues. It’s a bold strategy, I guess. 🌴
The kid grows up, turns into a teenager, and suddenly he’s got all these questions about the world. He’s meeting native girls and strangers, and the movie tries to frame this as some sort of deep emotional journey. It mostly just comes across as a series of awkward encounters in very fake-looking brush.
There’s a scene where our protagonist tries to interact with a stranger, and the silence is just deafening. You can see the actor thinking about what he had for lunch instead of the scene. It’s charming in a 'they tried' sort of way, but it doesn't make for great cinema.
It’s not as energetic as Speedy Meade, and it lacks the grit of something like Convict 993. It just sort of exists. It’s a beige movie about a green jungle.
Maybe it’s the way the characters constantly look at the camera when they think nobody is watching. Or maybe it’s the fact that the 'wild' elements feel like they were written by someone who had only ever seen a jungle in a textbook from 1920. Either way, it’s a weird watch.
I found myself wishing they’d just leaned into the absurdity more. If you’re going to do a jungle melodrama, why not go all out? Instead, it’s mostly just people standing around in uncomfortable clothes talking about the past. 🤷♂️
If you have a free afternoon and a high tolerance for slow, dated storytelling, give it a shot. Otherwise, stick to something else.
