5.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Impressions of Disraeli remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have any interest in how acting styles have mutated over the last century, sure. Otherwise, stay away. This is strictly for the folks who get a kick out of seeing 1920s-era filming techniques or people who genuinely love the political history of the British Empire. If you're looking for a plot, you're looking in the wrong place. This isn't One Week, that's for sure. It’s basically just a guy in a chair talking at you for a while.
Stanley Baldwin shows up for a bit at the start. He’s very stiff, very formal. It feels like watching a grandfather struggle to figure out how the camera works. Then we get to George Arliss.
Arliss is intense. You can tell he’s spent a long time perfecting this specific role. He’s got that old-school theatrical projection where every word hits the back wall of the theater. It feels a bit alien now. We aren't used to people speaking like this unless they’re doing a parody of a period drama.
The lighting is basically just 'bright and flat.' There isn't much to look at besides the man himself. Sometimes he stares just a bit too long into the lens. It creates this weird, uncomfortable intimacy that I’m not sure was intended.
The speeches are dense. Honestly, I zoned out for a solid minute while he was going on about some policy or another. My mind wandered off to thinking about how much work it must have been to set up all those lights back then. Did they get hot? They look hot.
It’s not quite as weird as The Pip from Pittsburg, but it has that same feeling of a time capsule that shouldn't have been opened. It is deeply earnest, which is both its best quality and its biggest flaw.
You can tell this was made to preserve something for the future. It just feels a little sad. Like a performance meant for a room of people that has long since cleared out. I prefer the energy of Shift the Gear, Freck, but this is a different kind of beast entirely. Don't go in expecting a thrill. It's just a guy, a suit, and a whole lot of words. 🎩
