A definitive 6.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. La bandera remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that smell like old wool and sweat, absolutely. It's for the folks who want to see Jean Gabin looking miserable in the sun. If you need a fast-paced thriller or something with a happy ending, keep walking. This isn't your bag.
The whole thing starts in Barcelona, but it really finds its pulse once they get to the barracks. There's this persistent dust that seems to coat everything on screen. You can almost taste the grit. Gabin plays Gilieth like he’s trying to disappear into his own collar.
The friendship dynamics here are... strange. Lucas is supposed to be this pal, but he moves with this weird, hovering energy. It makes your skin crawl a little. It reminded me a bit of the tension in The Defense Rests, where you’re never quite sure if the person next to you is a friend or just waiting for you to slip up.
There’s a scene in the mess hall that lasts way longer than it needs to. They’re just sitting there, eating, talking about nothing. It’s not 'plot-heavy.' It’s just people being tired. I actually liked that better than the big dramatic confrontations. The movie gets noticeably better once it stops trying to be a sweeping epic and just lets these guys be sweaty and annoyed.
There’s a moment toward the end where Gilieth is just staring at a wall. It lingers for a solid ten seconds after you think the cut is coming. It’s clumsy, but it works. It captures that feeling of being totally stuck.
It’s not a masterpiece, and it definitely feels like it was put together in pieces. But there's a raw, uneven honesty to it that you just don't see in polished studio stuff. You can feel the movie trying to convince you that the desert changes a man, but mostly it just shows you that the desert makes a man thirsty and irritable.
I left the screen feeling like I needed a glass of water. That’s probably the highest compliment I can give it. Don’t go looking for deep philosophy. Just watch the heat haze ripple off the ground.
