6.7/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Le paquebot Tenacity remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a faded postcard you found in an attic, Le paquebot Tenacity is for you. If you need a plot that moves faster than a slow walk along the docks, you’ll probably find yourself checking your watch every ten minutes. It’s not for the action crowd, that's for sure.
The whole thing hangs on this weird, heavy atmosphere of waiting. Bastien and Ségard are supposed to be heading for a new life, but they get hung up at this hotel, and honestly, the hotel feels like a character of its own. It’s got that drafty, lived-in energy you don't really see anymore.
There’s this moment where they’re just hanging around town, killing time before the boat leaves, and you can feel their restlessness. It’s not flashy, but it’s honest. Most directors would rush to the drama, but Duvivier just lets them sit there, drinking and talking about nothing.
Then the engine breaks. It’s such a simple, annoying plot device, but it works here because the movie isn't really about the boat anyway. It’s about the fact that they *could* leave, but maybe they don't actually want to. That hesitation is the best part of the whole film.
It’s funny to compare this to something like The Gorilla, which is just chaos on a screen. Here, the tension is internal. It’s all in the eyes of the actors when they realize the ship is leaving, or when they realize they’re falling in love with someone they just met in a hallway.
Bastien is a bit of a mess, if we're being real. He makes his choice to stay for Thérèse, and you’re left wondering if he’s doing it because he loves her or because he’s just afraid of the ocean. The movie doesn't tell you. It just lets the letter sit there on the table.
It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s got a pulse. Sometimes that’s enough. Just don't go in expecting a grand epic. It’s just two guys, a broken engine, and a very long week in a hotel that smells like salt and old wallpaper. 🌊
