Honestly, it depends on how much patience you have for old black-and-white dramas that move at their own pace. If you enjoy watching fancy people in rooms navigate awkward social traps, you might actually have a good time here. If you need explosions or fast cuts every three seconds, you should probably skip this one. It is not exactly a high-octane thriller.
The whole thing centers on a young attaché juggling two different wives of high-ranking ambassadors. It is the kind of premise that could either be a total disaster or a fun bit of social commentary. It lands somewhere in the middle, feeling a bit like a stage play that someone forgot to open the windows in.
There is this one scene where our lead is just trying to act like everything is normal while his boss is breathing down his neck. You can practically see the sweat on his brow, even if the camera work doesn't quite capture the panic. It is painfully relatable in a way I didn't expect from a movie from this era.
The dialogue? It is a bit stiff. Sometimes it feels like they are reading off cue cards that are taped to the furniture. But then, Olga Tschechowa walks into a room, and the whole energy shifts for a minute. She carries the scenes she is in, which is good, because otherwise, this would be a real slog.
It reminds me a bit of the social maneuvering you see in A hercegnö pongyolája, though without quite as much wit. Everyone is constantly checking over their shoulders. It makes you realize that being a diplomat was basically just being a professional liar.
It is not a perfect film. It is definitely not a masterpiece. But there is something honest about how it handles the pure exhaustion of trying to keep two lies running at once. Sometimes the movie stops for a bit just to let a character stare at a door, and you know exactly what they’re thinking. 🤐
I wouldn't say it reaches the heights of Rain in terms of sheer drama, but it manages to stay interesting enough to keep you watching. It’s a bit of a relic, but a mostly harmless one. Don't expect to be changed by it, just let it wash over you for an hour or so.
