6.6/10

A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Me and My Gal remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a neighborhood street corner in the 1930s, then yeah, you’ll dig this. It’s got that specific, loud-mouthed energy that old pre-Code films seem to have in spades. But if you’re looking for a smooth, polished drama where everyone talks like they’re in a library, you’ll probably find this bunch of characters pretty grating. It’s noisy, it’s messy, and it’s surprisingly fun.
Spencer Tracy is just starting to find his footing here as the cop, Dan. He’s got this way of talking out of the side of his mouth that makes you forget he’s acting. He’s charming, sure, but he’s also kind of a jerk in that way guys in these old movies always are. You know the type.
Joan Bennett as Helen? She’s the real engine of the whole thing. She isn't playing the damsel, even when the plot tries to shove her into that corner. She holds her own against Tracy in a way that feels like they’re actually fighting, not just reading lines at each other.
There's a scene near the middle where they are just sitting around, and the pacing goes totally off the rails. It lingers on a bit of banter that doesn't actually go anywhere. But you know what? I didn't mind. It felt like watching real people waste time.
It reminds me a little of the frantic pace you see in Pollyanna, but with a lot more grit under the fingernails. It doesn't have the high-concept weirdness of Aelita, the Queen of Mars, and thank god for that. It just wants to be a story about people in New York.
The ending is a bit of a rush job. It’s like the writers realized they had to finish the movie by Friday and just sprinted to the finish line. One minute you're having a nice conversation, the next, it’s all over. It’s not elegant. It’s just how it is.
Anyway, it’s a good way to spend an hour. Don't go looking for deep meaning. Just watch the way Tracy walks across a room and tell me you don't believe he’s been there a thousand times before.
