5.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Saturday Nights remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you really love old Swedish comedies or just want to see what people were watching in between the big stuff. If you need tight pacing and high stakes, stay away. This movie moves like a Sunday afternoon—slow, pleasant, and entirely unconcerned with where it’s actually going.
Nils Karlsson and the rest of the crew play it pretty straight, which is funny because the whole premise is based on them being idiots who get outplayed by Johnny. Seriously, how did they not see it coming? It’s the kind of movie where the "trick" is so obvious you want to reach into the screen and shake them.
It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in The Wonderful Chance, where everything feels like it might fall apart if someone speaks too loudly. There isn't much depth here, just a bunch of people moving through rooms and looking slightly confused.
The pacing is a disaster. There are moments where you think the movie is over, but then it just... keeps going. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, just unexpected. You don’t watch this for the plot. You watch it to see people like Edvard Persson chew the scenery a bit.
It’s not as gritty or weird as Jaws of Steel, obviously. It’s much lighter, though it definitely has that same vintage feel where every shadow looks like it was painted on. Sometimes the dialogue hits hard, and other times it just feels like they’re filling space until the next gag.
I caught myself looking at the wallpaper in the background during one of the longer monologues. It’s a very specific, floral kind of mess. Why was it there? Who knows. It kept me more entertained than the actual swindling plot for about five minutes. 🧐
Don't look for a grand moral or a deep dive into the human condition here. You won't find it. You’ll just find a bunch of guys in suits trying to act smarter than they are, and failing spectacularly. It’s fine. It’s just fine.
