4.5/10

A definitive 4.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Stone Age Error remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like they were made for three dollars and a half-eaten sandwich, you’ll probably have a blast with Stone Age Error. Everyone else? You’ll probably hate it within the first ten minutes. It’s not for the faint of heart, or for anyone who actually likes, you know, coherent scripts.
The whole thing starts with zero explanation, which I actually kind of respected. Mannie Davis and John Foster just sort of *appear* in a jungle-like setting. They look confused, and honestly, I think that was just them acting for real.
There’s this one scene where they’re trying to build a fire, and the prop wood is clearly just spray-painted cardboard. It stays on screen for a solid minute while they argue about how to rub sticks together. The silence in the woods is so heavy you can hear the cameraman breathing. It’s excruciating.
It’s not trying to be The Test of Donald Norton, that’s for sure. It feels much more like those old, clunky shorts you’d see buried in a collection of It's a Bird or similar oddities. It lacks the polish of Grandma's Boy, but it’s got this weird, desperate energy.
The dialogue is mostly grunts. Seriously. They spent half the runtime just sort of pointing at things and saying "uh" or "gah." It’s actually refreshing in a way, like they knew the writing was too bad to bother with actual words.
There is a moment near the end where the sky changes from sunny to stormy in about two seconds. It’s like they switched filters mid-take and just said, "Eh, good enough." I love that kind of stuff. It shows they didn't care about being perfect.
If you’re expecting something like Wild Honey, you’re in the wrong place. This isn’t a film you analyze. It’s a film you put on while you fold laundry or stare at the ceiling. 🙄
It’s a disaster, really. But it’s a friendly disaster. I’ve seen way worse. At least these guys seem like they were having a decent time failing at their craft.
