Summary
A timorous clerk, all starched collar and trembling cuffs, lives under the gingham tyranny of his pepper-pot grandmother in a drowsy hamlet that time misplaced. When a velvet-eyed tramp—equal parts carnival barker and stormcrow—descends on the town, the brute’s hunger for chaos strips varnish from picket fences and innocence from parlors. Our milquetoast, suddenly severed from apron strings, lurches through a gauntlet of comic humiliations: a runaway goat in a baptismal font, a shutter that guillotines his last dignity, a moonlit chase across barn rafters where moonshine drips like liquid mercury. Each pratfall scalds away cowardice until the boy, now half-harlequin and half-hero, confronts the tramp in a cyclone of dust and lantern light, proving that valor is often nothing more than terror that refuses to go home.
