6.2/10

A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Such Is My Country remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for grainy, old-school revolutionary dramas, sure, give it a whirl. If you need snappy editing and a plot that moves at warp speed, you’ll probably be checking your watch by the twenty-minute mark. It's the kind of movie that feels like it was filmed in another century—because it was—and it demands a bit of patience.
The whole setup feels like a classic stage play that just happens to have a camera pointed at it. The General rolls into town, all chest-thumping and glory, and it’s hard not to roll your eyes just a little bit at how much everyone fawns over him. The guy is basically a walking ego.
The love story? It’s exactly what you’d expect. The girl is pining for someone else, the General thinks he can just claim her like a trophy, and there’s a rival in the background squinting intensely at everyone. It feels a bit like A Doll's House, but with more sombreros and fewer existential crises.
There’s a bit of Cantinflas in here, which is always a treat, but he feels almost like he wandered in from a different, lighter movie. Every time he shows up, the tone shifts, and you realize how heavy the rest of the film is trying to be. It’s an uneven watch, for sure.
The rival’s plot against the General is so telegraphed you can practically see the mustache-twirling through the screen. It reminded me of some of the low-stakes tension in The Bar Sinister, where you just want to grab the characters by the shoulders and tell them to calm down.
Honestly, the best parts aren't the big speeches. It’s the quiet moments when the General is alone, looking out at the landscape, and you realize he’s probably just as tired of the hero routine as we are. Or maybe he's just hungry. It’s hard to tell with these older performances sometimes.
It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s got a weird, dusty heart. Don't go in expecting a history lesson. Go in expecting a loud, messy, and occasionally charming story about people who don't know how to say exactly what they mean.
