5.2/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 5.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Synnöve Solbakken remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a dusty book pulled off a library shelf, sure. It’s for the patient folks who don't mind a story that takes its sweet time getting to the point. If you need explosions or a plot that moves faster than a slow walk through a valley, you’ll probably find this thing boring as dirt.
I wasn't sure what to expect going in, honestly. It’s got that old-school vibe where people stand around looking burdened by life. You know the type.
The whole thing is basically about how hard it is to be a kid when your parents are busy being grumpy about history. Torbjörn and Synnöve are trying to just, you know, exist near each other. But there’s this wall of family drama, specifically because Torbjörn’s grandfather can't seem to stay away from the bottle.
It’s not exactly high-stakes action, but it’s real in a way that feels surprisingly heavy. You see the parents staring each other down across the fields and it’s just exhausting to watch. I kept wanting to yell at them to just let the kids be friends.
Sometimes the movie feels like it’s struggling to remember where it’s going, which honestly happens in plenty of older dramas—sort of like how things get a bit messy in A Free Soul. It’s not perfect. It’s got these lulls where you start checking your watch, and then suddenly someone says something that hits you right in the chest.
The pacing is… well, it’s a choice. It doesn't rush to make you like anyone. You just sit there and eventually you’re kind of rooting for them anyway. It’s the kind of film where you notice the textures—the wool sweaters, the wooden beams, the way the light hits the dirt.
I’m still thinking about that one shot of the valley. It’s empty. Just really, really empty. It makes the kids look so small, which I guess is the whole point. It's not a movie I’d watch every weekend, but it’s definitely not a waste of an afternoon if you’re in the right mood. 🌾
