6.5/10

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Terror Aboard remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a thing for old-school mysteries and don't mind when the plot gets a little bit dusty, you might get a kick out of Terror Aboard. It’s definitely not for anyone who needs high-octane pacing or modern production values. But if you like watching people in sharp suits argue in hallways while a ship drifts toward doom? You’re the target audience.
The whole setup is pretty straightforward. You find a ghost ship, you climb on board, and you spend the next hour wondering who is holding the knife. It feels a lot less polished than something like Movie Crazy, mostly because it’s trying to be tense and failing to be subtle about it.
There is this one moment where they find the first body, and the way the camera lingers on it feels like a stage play gone wrong. The lighting is harsh. It’s not atmospheric so much as it is just... bright and uncomfortable. I found myself staring at the wallpaper in the background more than the actual actors, which is never a great sign.
The dialogue is thick with that old-timey rhythm where everyone sounds like they're reading from a pamphlet on how to be suspicious. Neil Hamilton is doing his best to keep a straight face, but you can practically see the writers straining to make sure the audience stays confused until the final act. It reminds me of the pacing issues in The Last Performance, where the middle section just sort of hangs there, waiting for someone to do something interesting.
It’s not a masterpiece, and honestly, it barely holds together if you think about the logistics for more than five seconds. Still, there’s something oddly cozy about a movie that’s so eager to please. It reminded me a little bit of the smaller, tighter focus found in The Broken Commandments, just with more fog and fewer moral lessons.
If you’re looking for a deep, complex thriller, keep walking. If you want to see a bunch of guys in fedoras running around a fake boat while things go wrong in the most predictable way possible? Pour a drink and settle in. It’s weirdly charming in how tired it looks.
