6.9/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Bandmaster remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
The Bandmaster is one of those early Krazy Kat cartoons that just kinda… exists. If you're really into old-school animation, or maybe a student of film history, sure, give it a whirl. Otherwise, you'll probably find it very slow, a little baffling, and honestly, not much of a laugh riot. This is pure antique, folks. 🕰️
What we get here is Krazy Kat, in his sort of classic, simple form, leading a bunch of other animals in a concert. It's a pretty straightforward setup at first. The animation is very 1929, obviously. Movements are jerky, and everything feels a bit flat, but that's part of the charm, right? Or the challenge, depending on your patience.
The whole 'bandmaster' concept kicks in pretty quick. Krazy gets all these different personalities. He starts mimicking famous conductors of the day. The thing is, unless you know who those guys were in 1929, a lot of the visual gags just fly right over your head. It's like watching an inside joke from almost a century ago. You get the idea, but not the punch.
There's a moment where he's really going for it, flailing his arms around, and the instruments are just barely keeping up. It's chaotic, a bit endearing in its earnestness. One of the cats playing a trombone looks particularly put-out the whole time, like he's regretting signing up for this gig. I mean, who could blame him?
The sound is... well, it's a product of its time. It's not perfectly synced, and the music is just what you'd expect from a very early talkie short. It feels almost like background noise sometimes, not really part of the action. You can practically hear the crackle.
This isn't a cartoon you sit down and just enjoy for pure entertainment value today, unless you have a deep appreciation for its historical place. It's more of a curiosity, a glimpse into how animation started to find its voice. You can see the roots of later, much more polished antics here. But it’s definitely not Monkeying Around level crazy.
It just kind of ends, too, without much fanfare. You watch it, and then it's over, leaving you to ponder the sheer effort that must have gone into such a simple thing back then.
