5.8/10

A definitive 5.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Bread Peddler remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for heavy-handed, old-school French melodrama, maybe. If you want something that moves faster than a glacier in winter, stay far away. You will probably hate it if you get annoyed by characters who make every single decision based on pure, unadulterated suffering.
Honestly, watching The Bread Peddler felt a bit like reading a Victorian penny dreadful that someone decided to film on a budget. It is intense, sure, but it is the kind of intensity that makes you want to reach into the screen and just tell everyone to calm down for a second. 🥖
Mona Goya really carries the weight of the world here. She has this look of perpetual exhaustion that feels incredibly authentic, mostly because she spends about ninety percent of the runtime being accused of things she didn't do.
There is a specific scene near the middle where she is just staring off into the distance, and the camera lingers for so long I started checking my own phone. It wasn't profound. It was just long.
The pacing is all over the place. One minute we are deep in a courtroom drama, and the next, we are wandering through some dusty village that looks like it was made of cardboard. It has a similar clunky charm to Le Cirque de la Mort, which I guess is fine if you like that sort of thing.
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it a total disaster? Also no. It is just a movie that exists, occupying space, demanding you feel bad for the protagonist for two hours straight. Sometimes it hits, and sometimes it just feels like the movie is trying too hard to make me cry. 🙄
Also, the ending. I won't spoil it, but let's just say it wraps up with a neat little bow that feels entirely unearned after all the misery. It reminded me of how The Amazing Wife tries to tie up its loose ends—a bit too tidy, a bit too convenient.
Watch it if you have nothing else to do on a rainy Tuesday. Maybe keep the snacks nearby because you will need something to do with your hands while the plot takes its sweet time getting anywhere.
