5.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Picnic Panic remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a high tolerance for early, slightly unsettling animation techniques, then sure, go for it. If you’re a parent looking for something to keep the kids quiet, you might find them just staring at the screen in pure confusion instead. It’s definitely not for anyone who hates the feeling of a movie trying too hard to be 'whimsical' while failing to actually make sense.
So, there’s this coffee pot. It’s animated, and it’s telling a story to three actual human children because apparently, that’s a normal thing to do on a rainy day. It reminds me a bit of the weird, disjointed energy you find in Bosko's Woodland Daze, but with even less internal logic.
The transition between the real kids and the cartoon world is... well, it’s not exactly smooth. It’s the kind of editing that makes you wonder if someone just glued two different movies together while they were having a fever dream. The coffee pot itself has these eyes that just seem to stare into your soul, which is not the vibe I was looking for at noon on a Tuesday. ☕️
The picnic story itself? It’s just a blur of slapstick. Things fall over, people trip, and there’s a general sense of chaos that feels like it belongs in something like False Alarm. You can tell they were trying to capture that classic energetic spirit, but it ends up feeling more like a sugar rush that went on way too long.
The pacing is honestly all over the place. One minute you're watching the coffee pot do his little dance, and the next you're deep in a forest with animated ants doing things that don't really move the plot forward. It’s not necessarily bad, just deeply strange. It feels like the movie was made by people who had a lot of coffee but no script.
I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend this, but if you’re into the history of weird animation experiments, it’s a curiosity. It’s a bit like watching Raindrops, but with a much higher chance of it showing up in your nightmares. Just don't expect it to make you hungry for an actual picnic.
