7.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Pooch remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, if you have a soft spot for the classic
The whole premise is just a classic chase. The dogcatcher is the ultimate villain in a kid’s world, right? Watching them try to outsmart him is mostly just an excuse for organized mayhem. It’s funny how they managed to make the dogcatcher look like the most miserable person in the entire world. Maybe he just needed a nap.
I couldn't help but notice how much dirt is in every single frame. You can almost smell the dust and the old film stock. There’s this one moment where Spanky looks directly at the camera, probably not by accident, and for a second, the whole illusion of the story just evaporates. It felt like he was checking to see if his mom was off-set.
The dialogue is sparse, but that’s fine. Sometimes it’s better when they just stop talking and let the physical comedy do the work. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Felix the Cat Uses His Head, where things just sort of happen because they need to happen for the next gag to start.
Is it better than the more polished comedies of the era like Colleen? Probably not. But there’s a grit to it that makes it feel less like a product and more like a captured moment of kids just being loud and messy. It’s not trying to be a masterpiece, and honestly, that’s exactly why I liked it. Sometimes you just want to see a dog outrun a grumpy guy in a hat. 🐾
It’s not a film you analyze. It’s a film you just watch until it ends. Then you go make a sandwich.
