6.9/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Secret Menace remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you’re into the kind of bargain-bin westerns that feel like they were stitched together with twine, you might get a kick out of The Secret Menace. It’s for the folks who enjoy seeing a bit of horse-riding mixed with some extremely low-stakes murder plots. If you need your movies to make sense or have, you know, actual pacing, you’ll probably hate it.
The whole thing starts with a prospector who finds gold and then immediately dies for it. It’s the classic setup, right? But instead of a gritty thriller, we get a dude ranch story involving weekly rodeo shows. Because why not? It reminded me a bit of the vibe in The Texas Kid, though with significantly less focus on the actual tension.
There’s this moment where the ranch owner decides to build a dam to fix the water supply. It felt like a weird pivot into a home-improvement show, mid-western. I kept waiting for someone to mention the zoning permits. 🤠
The dialogue is often just people standing in rooms explaining exactly what they’re about to do. It lacks that sharp, snappy energy you find in better genre stuff. It’s not quite as messy as The Wrecker, but it’s definitely not winning any screenwriting awards either.
The middle act just sort of sits there. It’s like the film forgot it had a murder mystery to solve and decided to host a rodeo instead. I’m not saying I don’t like watching people ride horses, but it feels like the movie is trying to trick me into thinking the plot is thicker than it is.
When the climax finally hits, it’s all very rushed. The bad guys are running around the mine, and everyone is suddenly an expert tracker. It feels like the director just wanted to get home for dinner. Honestly, I kind of get it.
It’s a strange little artifact. If you’re bored on a Sunday afternoon and you’ve already seen everything else, sure. Otherwise, maybe just watch some actual rodeos on YouTube.
