The Westland Case: A Perfectly Decent Old-School Whodunnit

Is it worth your time?

If you like old black-and-white detective stories, yes. It's a brisk watch that doesn't waste time with unnecessary fluff. If you hate movies where people stand around talking in rooms for forty minutes, stay away. This is pure dialogue and deduction.

The whole setup is one of those classic impossible crimes. A girl is dead inside a room, and the doors are locked from the inside. How? Why? I spent half the movie trying to figure out the trick before they even revealed it. Sometimes you just want a movie that treats you like a puzzle-solver.

There is this moment about halfway through where a character walks across the room and trips over a rug—it’s probably a mistake by the actor, but nobody cut it. It makes the whole scene feel lived-in and real, unlike the polished garbage we see today. I loved it.

The detective work isn't exactly high-brow. It’s mostly guys in suits looking serious while smoke hangs in the air. Reminds me a bit of the pacing in Ship of Wanted Men, where the stakes feel personal even if the budget was clearly tight.

The lighting in the final act gets really moody. It feels like they ran out of light bulbs and just decided to make it look 'dramatic' instead. It works, though. It’s funny how a lack of resources can actually make a scene feel tighter.

I found myself staring at the background extras a lot. There's one guy in the back of the station house who just sits there for three straight scenes reading a newspaper. Does he ever flip the page? I watched him for five minutes. Nope. He just stares at the same headline.

Maybe it’s not as legendary as Wild Orchids, but it’s got a pulse. It’s not trying to change the world. It’s just trying to solve a murder, and that’s plenty.

Notes from the couch:

• The dialogue is fast enough that you can't check your phone.
• One of the doors clearly isn't locked, but nobody mentions it.
• The lead detective has a great, tired face. He looks like he hasn't slept since 1930.
• Some of the supporting cast are clearly just there to point at clues.

Look, it’s not a masterpiece. It’s a rainy Tuesday afternoon movie. It does exactly what it says on the tin. Sometimes that's the best thing you can ask for. 🕵️‍♂️
