5.3/10

A definitive 5.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. There Is a Ball Today remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a glitch in a historical archive, yeah. If you need a plot that goes from point A to point B, you will probably be bored to tears within five minutes. It’s for the folks who like staring at old film grain and wondering what the people in the background were actually talking about.
The whole thing is basically a fever dream of an architecture student party. There are twenty-three rooms, six orchestras, and a lot of people in tuxedos who look like they’re having the night of their lives. It captures that specific chaos of a party where you realize you’ve been drinking since 4:00 PM and the sun is somehow starting to come up.
The camera work is… well, it’s twitchy. They clearly had a blast with photographic deformations and weird lighting tricks. Sometimes the screen just gets all wavy and distorted, and I sat there wondering if my laptop was dying before I realized it was just a choice.
There’s this one sequence where the phone calls are being made, and it’s just pure, frantic energy. You can practically feel the stress of the organizers trying to get everyone to show up. It’s got that same frantic energy you’d find in Whoopee!, but with a lot more focus on interior design and architecture students behaving badly.
The lighting in the dance scenes is genuinely wild. They use these high-contrast shadows that make everyone look like they’re dancing in a haunted house. It’s not smooth, it’s not polished, and that’s exactly why I kept watching. It’s messy in a way that feels honest.
Honestly, it reminds me a bit of the frantic pacing in Silk Stockings, but without the benefit of a clear script. It’s just visual noise and rhythmic editing. I think they cared more about the trick shots than the guests actually having a good time.
Small things I noticed:
It’s not a film you analyze. It’s a film you just sort of let wash over you while you wonder how they pulled off some of those camera tricks without digital software. Sometimes the screen just goes a bit blurry and it feels like you’re looking through a glass of champagne. 🥂
It’s not perfect. It’s not even really a movie, if we’re being honest. It’s more like a vibe captured on celluloid. But for a few minutes, it’s really something.
