6.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Upperworld remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like 1930s dramas that feel like they were written on a bar napkin after midnight, yes. Watch this if you want to see Warren William being his usual slick, slightly sweaty self. If you need clean character arcs or a movie that holds your hand through the plot, skip it. You will probably hate how fast it moves, honestly.
The whole thing kicks off with this weird, frantic energy. It’s a classic setup—rich guy meets girl, blackmail happens, everyone panics. But the way they handle the blackmail feels so blunt, almost like they were in a rush to get to the next scene.
Warren William is great at playing these guys who think they’re the smartest person in the room until they aren’t. Watching him try to navigate the situation is like watching a guy try to walk on ice in dress shoes. He’s elegant, but he’s definitely going to slip.
Ginger Rogers is in this too, but it feels like the movie doesn't quite know what to do with her. She’s there, she’s sharp, but she disappears from the stakes way too early. It’s a shame, really.
It’s not as polished as something like The Amateur Gentleman, but that’s the charm. It’s got these rough edges where the seams are showing. Sometimes the camera lingers on a reaction for just a second too long, and it becomes this weird, voyeuristic moment that wasn't planned.
I caught myself thinking about how much different the pacing is compared to Rough House Rosie. Where that one felt like a cohesive story, this feels like a series of bad decisions strung together with high-quality film stock. It doesn't try to be profound. It just wants to keep you watching until the credits roll. 🎬
Anyway, don’t look for a moral. There isn't one. The movie ends exactly how you expect it to, but the ride is just bumpy enough to keep you awake. It’s a good way to kill an hour if you’re bored on a Tuesday.
