6.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Vorstadtvariete remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a thing for vintage Viennese atmosphere or just want to see how movies used to handle the whole "my girlfriend is a performer" trope, sure. It’s definitely not for folks who need fast pacing or characters that make rational decisions. If you liked the slow, deliberate mood of The Ballet Girl, you might find something here to latch onto, though it's a different beast entirely.
There is this heavy, dusty feeling to the whole production. It’s like the movie is trying to capture the final breath of a world before everything goes sideways. The architect guy is honestly pretty insufferable. He treats his girlfriend’s career like a personal insult, which felt like a massive red flag from the jump. 🚩
I found myself watching the background extras more than the leads at certain points. There’s a specific scene in the cabaret that feels oddly stiff, like everyone is waiting for a bus instead of listening to a song. It’s not necessarily bad, just… strange.
The whole choice to just leave for the infantry feels like the most dramatic "I'm not talking to you anymore" move in cinema history. You can almost see the gears turning in his head, deciding that cannons are way easier to deal with than a woman with a hobby. It’s frustrating, but it’s also kind of fascinating in a car-crash sort of way.
It doesn't quite have the polish of The Great Gabbo, but it has this specific, moody charm that sticks with you. Just don't go in expecting a romantic comedy. It’s more like a romantic tantrum that somehow ends in a uniform.
There’s a scene near the middle where the dialogue just stops, and we’re stuck staring at a table for way too long. I’m not sure if the editor fell asleep or if they wanted us to really feel the silence. It worked, mostly because I ended up counting the patterns on the wallpaper instead of thinking about the plot.
Honestly? It’s a weird, grumpy little movie. It’s not trying to be a masterpiece, and that’s probably why it’s tolerable. Just don't ask me to defend the protagonist’s life choices.
