6.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Yorck remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like your movies to feel like a dusty textbook coming to life with a budget for fancy coats, you might dig Yorck. If you need pacing that doesn't feel like a slow march across a frozen field, stay far away. This isn't exactly The Wild Party, if you catch my drift. It’s dense, quiet, and very, very Prussian.
The whole thing hangs on Werner Krauss. He plays the General with this look of constant, weary indigestion that actually works pretty well. He’s stuck between a King who’s playing both sides and a conscience that’s getting louder by the minute.
There is a scene in a tent where the lighting is so moody you can barely see the map they’re arguing over. It drags on for about three minutes too long. You can tell they really wanted us to feel the gravity of the decision, but honestly, I just wanted someone to move the candle. It’s those little moments where the movie feels more like a stage play than a film.
The supporting cast is packed with these guys who look like they were born wearing epaulets. Some of the dialogue is so formal it sounds like they’re reading from a legal contract. It’s not necessarily bad, but it’s definitely not conversational. It’s stiff.
Comparing this to something like Pension Schöller feels like a crime because they are trying to do such different things. Yorck is trying to be important. It’s trying to be a monolith. Sometimes it succeeds, mostly just by sheer force of will.
There’s a specific bit where Yorck stands alone in the snow, and the frame stays frozen on his face for way too long. It’s meant to be powerful. Instead, it’s just cold. I found myself wondering if the actor was actually freezing or if that was just really good makeup. That’s probably not what the director wanted me thinking about, but here we are.
It’s not a movie I’d watch twice. It’s a movie you watch once, nod at respectfully, and then go read a Wikipedia page to make sure you understood the politics. Hardly a light watch. ❄️
