6.4/10

A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Young Sinners remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, it depends on how much you enjoy that specific kind of 1930s-style melodrama where every line is delivered with a bit too much intent. If you like old-school character arcs involving spoiled rich kids finding their 'grit,' then sure, give it a whirl. If you hate movies where the 'rebellious' character is just someone pouting in a nice suit, you’ll probably want to skip this one entirely. 🙄
James Kirkwood is trying his best here, but the writing feels like it’s holding him back. He plays the classic bored millionaire’s son who just can't find a reason to wake up in the morning. We've seen this archetype a thousand times, and unfortunately, Young Sinners doesn't do much to reinvent the wheel.
The pacing is a bit of a disaster. Sometimes we’re sprinting through important life lessons in three minutes, and other times we’re stuck in a room watching two people talk about their 'feelings' for what feels like an hour. It’s a strange, stop-and-go rhythm that makes it hard to actually care about the stakes.
If you're in the mood for something a bit more frantic and less self-serious, you might be better off looking at something like The Cyclone, which at least doesn't pretend to be a deep character study. Young Sinners feels a bit heavy-handed, like it’s constantly trying to convince you that this guy’s personal drama is the most important thing happening on Earth.
It’s not a complete waste, though. There are moments where the dialogue actually clicks and you get a glimpse of a real human being behind the script. It’s just a shame those moments are buried under layers of melodrama that feel like they belong in a different, much older era of filmmaking.
Also, the ending? It just kind of… stops. It doesn't really resolve in a way that feels earned. It’s just a fade-to-black moment that leaves you feeling like the movie just ran out of film and called it a day. 🤷♂️
