Biography
Born under the wide Missouri sky on 21 June 1871, DeWitt Jennings grew up in Cameron and carried its frontier grit all the way to Hollywood. A character actor with a granite jaw and a voice that could out-boom the ship’s horn, he barked orders as the stalwart first mate in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), stole scenes from Beatrice Lillie in the silent screwball romp Exit Smiling (1926), and chased shadows through the Expressionist corridors of The Bat Whispers (1930). Off-screen he anchored his life to Margaret Ethel Conroy; together they navigated the shifting tides of early Tinseltown until Jennings’s final curtain fell on 1 March 1937 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
