Moonlit adobe walls whisper hexes in The Veiled Mystery, a 1920 phantasmagoria that drifts like cigar smoke across a New Mexican plaza: half-blood aristocrat Don Rafael Moreno, haunted by a crimson mask glimpsed in childhood, returns from Madrid to find his ancestral hacienda usurped by a sect of flagellant Penitentes who stage nocturnal crucifixions in candle-lit caves; his beloved cousin Dolores, promised to the sect’s prophet, carries a birth-mark shaped like the sacred heart, a stigmata the zealots read as divine warrant for her immolation. Rafael, aided by a roguish American mining engineer and a mute boy who sculpts saints from river clay, unearths ledgers proving the order’s cabal with a U.S. railroad syndicate; each revelation peels another lace veil off local piety until the final procession erupts into a fusillade of rifles, fireworks, and flamenco guitars.
