Biography
Columbus, Ohio, greeted Julia Swayne Gordon on 29 October 1878, and by the time the movies learned to talk, she had already mastered the art of speaking with her eyes. Between 1916’s My Lady’s Slipper and 1923’s You Can’t Fool Your Wife, she built a résumé of silents that culminated in 1927 when she took wing—literally—as one of the fearless flyers in William Wellman’s Oscar-winning sky-epic Wings. Off-screen, she shared her life with husband Hugh Thomas Swayne. On 28 May 1933, Los Angeles closed its curtains on her story at age fifty-four.
