Biography
Budapest, 3 November 1884: a boy named Károly Huszár enters the world of the Habsburg twilight and will one day trade the Danube fog for the klieg lights of Hollywood. Between 1923 and 1928 he slips into three very different skins—Ripp’s tormented friend, the scarred clown Gwynplaine in The Man Who Laughs, and a Russian peasant caught in the jaws of revolution for Mockery—leaving ink and celluloid to remember him by. Actor, scenarist, perpetual exile, he finally outruns Europe only to fold his final chapter in wartime Tokyo, 1942, far from the river that first carried his name.
