William Welsh

Biography

Philadelphia greeted William Welsh on February 9, 1870, and from that day forward he carried the city’s brisk energy onto stages and screens across America. Audiences came to know him as the sharpshooter mastermind in *The Bull’s Eye* (1917), the intrepid chronicler battling jungle perils in *With Stanley in Africa* (1922), and the fiery newspaperman at the heart of *Burning Words* (1923). When the final curtain fell on July 16, 1946, Welsh’s last act closed in Los Angeles, the adopted hometown that had watched him transform from East-Coast unknown to silver-screen staple.
