Biography

Chicago greeted 11 January 1878 with winter wind and a newborn named Elmer Harris, who would grow up to trade the city’s clangor for the glow of footlights and film sets. By the Roaring Twenties he was spinning stories at a blistering clip: Ransom strapped audiences to their seats in 1928, No More Women (1924) winked at flappers and skeptics alike, and the 1934 road-trip romance Cross Country Cruise rolled across screens like a love letter to the open highway. Behind the camera he also shepherded projects as a producer, steering scripts from page to premiere while his wife, Wilhelmina B. Henderson, stood beside him through every plot twist life supplied. Sixty-eight summers after that icy Chicago birthday, on 6 September 1966, the final curtain fell in Washington, D.C., closing an American life that had helped script the century’s daydreams.
