Summary
In an intricate ballet of bureaucratic desperation and frantic velocity, After a Million depicts the converging fates of a displaced Russian countess and a pragmatic American youth, both ensnared by the capricious whims of testamentary law. The countess, a relic of an evaporating Old World order, finds her future solvency tethered to a matrimonial ultimatum: she must secure a Yankee spouse within a punishingly brief window or forfeit a colossal inheritance. Simultaneously, a young man navigates a literal and metaphorical obstacle course across the urban sprawl, racing against a relentless clock to reach a financial institution before a designated deadline to claim his own windfall. Their paths collide in a whirlwind of physical comedy and high-stakes adventure, where the ticking second hand serves as a more formidable antagonist than any human villain, illustrating the absurd intersections of aristocratic legacy and the burgeoning industrial-age obsession with punctuality.
