Biography
Born among the sawmills of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on 2 April 1871, Joseph W. Girard traded small-town riverbanks for klieg lights and back-lot dreams. Over four busy decades he morphed from stage scribbler to weathered character staple, stamping his craggy authority on Captain Midnight’s 1942 cliff-hanger skies, lampooning high-society foibles in 1935’s Social Error, and, back in the silent sunrise of 1917, steering the sentimental currents of Beloved Jim. The final curtain fell on 21 August 1949 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, closing a life spent spinning stories in the California sun.
