Das Martyrium

In the gas-lit dusk of Weimar Berlin, a tormented sculptor, Andreas Falk (Ernst Stahl-Nachbaur), chisels agony into marble while his own flesh betrays him: a degenerative palsy mocks each stroke of genius. Into his atelier drifts the ethereally wrecked ballerina Elke (Pola Negri), her ankle shattered by scandal as much as by gravity. She barters ruined grace for his crumbling guardianship; he offers mutilated art for her salvaged dignity. Their pact combusts when Andreas’s benefactor-cum-rival, the industrialist Baron von Malzahn (Eduard von Winterstein), commissions a Pietà yet demands a living model who can still dance on sin rather than on stage. Elke, cornered by creditors and the predatory Baron, consents, believing her martyrdom will bankroll Andreas’s last masterwork. Instead, the sculptor’s tremoring hands fracture under the weight of his own iconography, and the Baron’s obsession metastasizes into a collector’s cruelty: he covets not the statue but the corrosion of the woman who inspired it. Meanwhile, Elke’s former partner, the consumptive mime Hans (Hans Kuhnert), stalks the periphery like a ghost who refuses to die quietly, scripting a pantomime of vengeance that will premiere on the night the marble Madonna is unveiled. What follows is a danse macabre of chisels, corsets, and camera irises that dilate like pupils high on morphine: Elke posed as Virgin yet sold as courtesan; Andreas sculpting his own crucifixion in stone; the Baron turning gallery into tribunal; Hans exchanging whiteface for the blood-smeared mask of nemesis. When the curtain falls, the finished Pietà stands immaculate, but the bodies around it—splintered, poisoned, shot—form a living Stations of the Cross. The film ends on a freeze-frame of Elke’s foot, still bleeding from the glass shard hidden in her satin slipper, hovering an inch above the christening basin of the Baron’s grandchild: a perverse annunciation that salvation and scandal are carved from the same slab.
