Summary
A provincial notary, Herr Hauers, finds his meticulously inked ledgers—once the quiet scripture of civic probity—suddenly brandished as evidence of grand larceny. Overnight, the hushed pieties of small-town ledgers transmute into a theatre of accusation: whispered tallies become roars of fraud, inked numerals metamorphose into stigmata. Hauers, a man whose pulse once beat in metronomic synch with stamp-pads and wax seals, is dragged through a carnival of jurisprudence where each procedural flourish corrodes identity a little further.
