Going Straight
Summary
In a world where past transgressions linger like specters, Bernard McConville's 'Going Straight' masterfully dissects the fragile edifice of a meticulously constructed new life. Our protagonists, a husband and wife, have shed the grimy vestiges of their criminal pasts, meticulously crafting an existence rooted in respectability and societal acceptance. Their carefully cultivated tranquility, however, proves to be a mere illusion, a thin veneer over deep-seated anxieties. The narrative's true tension ignites with the sudden, unwelcome reappearance of a former associate, a shadowy figure from their shared underworld. This insidious specter, armed with the potent threat of exposure, wields their former identities as a weapon, compelling them toward an unwilling participation in a new, audacious heist. The film thus becomes a poignant exploration of the inescapable gravity of one's history, forcing the audience to confront the harrowing choice between safeguarding a hard-won present and succumbing to the blackmail that promises to unravel everything.
