Summary
Alfalfa Doolittle, a perennial fixture of the rural general store’s potbellied stove, undergoes a surreal metamorphosis from a local blowhard to a federal legislator. Having spent a lifetime dispensing unsolicited, folksy wisdom to any captive audience within earshot of the cracker barrel, Doolittle’s armchair political theories are unexpectedly put to the ultimate test when the local electorate, in a fit of either collective madness or profound irony, elevates him to a seat in Congress. The narrative follows this bucolic raconteur as he grapples with the transition from the parochial comforts of provincial idleness to the labyrinthine machinations of Washington D.C., exploring the inherent absurdity and the terrifying simplicity of the democratic process through the lens of a man who is entirely unqualified yet utterly confident.
Synopsis
Alfalfa Doolittle has never done much but sit around the stove at the country store and tell all comers his ideas on how the country should be run. He is finally elected to run for Congress.
