Summary
In a labyrinthine display of Oedipal friction and pastoral displacement, His New Mamma unfolds as a biting satire on the fragility of the patriarchal ego. The narrative centers on a farm-bound family unit where the father, consumed by a green-eyed paranoia that borders on the pathological, misinterprets his son’s innocent interactions with his young fiancée. This domestic rupture results in the son’s unceremonious exile from the agrarian cradle of his youth. Cast out into the burgeoning, sun-drenched industrialism of 1920s California, the protagonist undergoes a metamorphosis, finding a new romantic anchor while laboring under the weight of his father’s injustice. However, the hand of fate—ever the cruel playwright in Mack Sennett’s universe—orchestrates a chance encounter in the city that shatters the son's remaining illusions. He discovers his father’s intended bride, the eponymous 'New Mamma,' engaged in a clandestine tryst with another man. The film thus evolves from a simple slapstick romp into a moralistic crusade, as the displaced farm boy must navigate the treacherous waters of urban infidelity to prevent a second, more permanent injustice from poisoning his family’s legacy.
