Summary
In the wind‑swept hamlet of Whitby‑bay, the patriarch John Linden abandons his lawful wife and infant daughter for the beguiling Jessie Walton, only to desert Jessie after the birth of their own child. The elder daughter, Nancy, is thrust into a marriage of necessity with the salt‑stained fisherman Jack Yeulette, while the younger, Jessie, descends into the nocturnal underworld as a streetwalker. Years later, a fortune amassed in the mineral‑rich expanses of South Africa beckons John back, prompting a desperate attempt to reconcile with his estranged progeny. The scheming solicitor Mark Lezzard, however, intercepts the inheritance, weaving a web of deception that pits Nancy’s doppelgänger sister against the fidelity of her marriage. Jack, spurred by suspicion, confronts the illusion, only to discover the truth while rescuing Jessie from a capsizing vessel. The narrative culminates in a poignant reunion as John returns, his wealth finally reaching the daughters he once spurned, and the fractured family tentatively mends beneath the relentless tide.
