Summary
Beneath the cedar-shadowed eaves of a clapboard chapel, John Carver’s gaze fractures: inside, Nan—once the marrow of his own marrow—pronounces herself forever the property of Julio Cumberland, timber-baron and small-town demigod. Snowflakes drift like slow confetti while a Mountie, Private Dick Osborne, lover to Nan’s step-daughter Dorothy, clocks the intruder through stained-glass shimmer; recognition ignites a fuse of old letters, vanished kisses, and unspoken betrayals. Julio’s jealousy curdles into violence; Dick is left bleeding among the hymnals. At dawn Nan lies ice-white on the chancel floor, a crimson ribbon across her throat. Suspicion ricochets toward the unconscious officer until Carver, cornered in the pines, bargains his last scrap of agency: a confession bartered for the future happiness of Dorothy and her Dick. The forest swallows his whisper; the church bell tolls twelve times for a woman who married one man, died by another, and was mourned by neither.
Synopsis
John Carver looked through the window of a little church in the North woods and saw the woman who had once been his own being made the wife of Julio Cumberland, the most prosperous citizen in the village. He is pursued by Private Dick Osborne, of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police, the lover of Nan's new stepdaughter, who recognizes the uninvited guest and knows Nan's story. Julio regards the conferences of his bride and Dick with jealous suspicion, and while spied upon by the criminal, attacks the officer, leaving him unconscious. Later the bride is found dead, and suspicion points to the officer as her murderer. John is captured and admits his guilt only when Dorothy prevails upon him to save the happiness of herself and the officer by confessing the crime.
