Summary
In the opulent yet precarious social strata of the 1920s, Cynthia Brock, a woman refined by privilege and accustomed to the trappings of high fashion, is plunged into immediate destitution upon the unexpected demise of her father. Her sudden penury, compounded by a formidable dressmaker's debt exceeding $6,000, renders her vulnerable to the predatory gaze of Fenwick Flint. A newly minted millionaire, Flint, observing Cynthia's desperate straits, devises a cynical plot: he intends to leverage her financial ruin to orchestrate a seduction of James Gordon, whose wife Flint covets. Initially resistant to such a morally compromising proposition, Cynthia, faced with the overwhelming prospect of social and financial oblivion, reluctantly accedes to Flint's substantial offer of $10,000. The scene shifts to a secluded mountain lodge, where the insidious scheme is set to unfold. However, prolonged proximity to Gordon sparks an unforeseen, genuine connection within Cynthia, igniting a profound sense of remorse. Overwhelmed by guilt, her anguished sobs inadvertently draw Gordon to her room, a moment Flint and his conspirators seize upon to stage a compromising tableau. Cornered by the fabricated evidence, Gordon, to salvage Cynthia's reputation, agrees to a divorce and chivalrously proposes marriage. Yet, Cynthia's awakened conscience compels her to confess the entire manipulative design. Returning Flint's illicit funds, she embarks on a path of honest labor as a stenographer, diligently settling her debts. Meanwhile, Flint's momentary triumph – marrying Gordon's ex-wife – proves hollow, their union swiftly dissolving. The narrative concludes with a redemptive arc for Gordon, shedding his initial bitterness, as he fortuitously reconnects with a transformed Cynthia, culminating in their eventual, authentic marriage.
