The Awakening

Set in the tense atmosphere of Alsace just before World War I, 'The Awakening' follows Marie Ducrot, a virtuous young peasant woman, who finds herself entangled in a forbidden romance with Count Karl von Hagen, a German Army lieutenant. Their relationship draws the ire of her townspeople, leading to public scorn. When Marie is mistakenly reported dead, she seeks solace as a novice in a religious order. However, fate intervenes as war erupts, and Karl, wounded in battle near her convent, is nursed back to health by Marie. Despite the conflict, their love rekindles, and with the unlikely aid of a French sergeant, Le Bête, they attempt to escape to safety behind German lines, hoping for a future together amidst the chaos of war.
