Summary
Amid blistering alkali flats where mirages shimmy like silver coins, a lone rider—part coyote, part phantom—cuts a trench through the dust. They call him The Wolf; the territory itself seems to flinch when his shadow lengthens. From a sun-scorched wagon he plucks a gaunt woman and her wide-eyed boy, their lips cracked, their hope thinner than a moth wing. The woman’s husband swings in a rope-and-iron purgatory, branded a rustler by a sheriff who hoards justice like poker chips. A bargain is struck: one night of her surrender in exchange for one life snatched back from the gallows. The deed done, the child’s guileless grin pierces the gunman’s calloused armor; suddenly the coin flips. Instead of claiming payment, The Wolf ferries the family toward reunion, disappearing into dusk while the desert, stunned, forgets how to howl.
