Summary
The Indestructible Wife" unfurls a domestic maelstrom born from marital disequilibrium, where the newlywed Jimmy Ordway finds himself utterly enervated by the ceaseless vivacity of his bride, Charlotte. Their honeymoon, far from a languid idyll, unfolds as an Olympic-level endurance test: a relentless carousel of golfing, riding, boating, swimming, polo, mountain climbing, all capped off by nightly, vigorous dancing. The film wastes no time in establishing this central comedic tension, painting Jimmy not as a weakling, but as a man simply outmatched by a force of nature he neither anticipated nor comprehended. Desperate for respite, he orchestrates a peculiar conspiracy at their homecoming fête, enlisting his male acquaintances to engage Charlotte in an unbroken succession of activities, hoping to finally exhaust her indomitable spirit. This elaborate ruse, however, introduces the formidable Brandy, a professional athlete whose own prodigious energy finds its match, and indeed, its ultimate challenge, in Charlotte. Intrigued by her unique vigor, Brandy attempts to undermine the nascent marriage, revealing Jimmy's seemingly wandering eye toward Julia Cleves, whose solicitous attentions have offered the weary husband a momentary distraction. Witnessing the clandestine "smoke kisses," Charlotte confronts Jimmy, her disappointment palpable. Galvanized by a Petruchio-esque resolve, Jimmy embarks on an audacious, if anachronistic, quest to "tame" his spirited wife, resorting to a theatrical abduction and confinement within a boathouse. Yet, in a delicious twist of psychological complexity, Charlotte secretly relishes this forceful assertion of desire. The ensuing dramatic crescendo sees Brandy arrive, ostensibly for a rescue, but his subsequent attempt at an unwelcome intimacy is met with Charlotte's decisive, unceremonious dispatch into the water. The narrative culminates in a joyful, if unconventional, reunion, with Jimmy embracing his now-willingly-subdued, yet still formidable, spouse, as she prepares a feast for their thirty friends, a testament to a marriage forged in the crucible of wills and unconventional affection.
