Summary
Cynthia Stockton, a woman of spirited independence, finds her leisurely drive abruptly interrupted by a head-on collision with the vehicle of Stanley Warrington, a reclusive author with a pronounced disdain for women. Their initial encounter, a battle of wills over a one-way road, establishes Cynthia's impetuous nature and Warrington’s stubborn resolve. Undeterred by his refusal to yield, Cynthia resourcefully commandeers a milkman’s truck to continue her journey home. However, her return is met with a devastating personal betrayal: she discovers her fiancé, Addison Walsh, in a compromising embrace with her own sister, Renée, on the eve of her wedding. Disillusioned and heartbroken, Cynthia flees, inexplicably finding solace and temporary refuge in Warrington's home, where she falls asleep in a vacant room. Warrington, discovering her presence, is utterly aghast and pleads with her to leave, fearing scandal. Before she can be persuaded, her father arrives unexpectedly. In a moment of desperate impulse, Cynthia declares that she and Warrington have just been married. This impulsive lie ignites a cascade of comedic complications, as her father enthusiastically proposes a wedding tour. Forced into this charade, the unlikely pair embarks on a steamship voyage where, amidst the confined quarters and shared predicament, a genuine understanding begins to blossom, culminating in their actual marriage by the ship's captain.
