5.7/10

A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Law in Her Hands remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that move fast and don't bother with long, boring speeches about ethics, you'll probably enjoy this. It’s for the crowd that prefers a snappy 60-minute runtime over a bloated drama. If you need your legal thrillers to be perfectly logical or grounded in actual law, skip it. You will absolutely hate how quickly these people ditch their morals for a paycheck.
Glenda Farrell is the engine here. She’s got this way of firing off lines like she’s trying to win a bet against the clock. When she’s on screen, you stop worrying about how flimsy the plot is. She just makes it work.
The whole premise is that being a "good" lawyer doesn't pay the bills. I mean, sure, it's a bit of a tired trope, but there's something satisfying about watching them just throw in the towel. They start taking cases for mobsters, and suddenly the office furniture looks a lot nicer. It’s funny how that happens.
There’s a scene where they’re weighing their bank balance against their conscience, and it lasts about five seconds. They don't linger on the guilt. They just move on to the next suit. It’s refreshing, really. No long monologues about the soul of the justice system. Just, "We have rent due, let's go defend that guy who definitely did it."
The movie isn't trying to be The Headline Woman or anything profound. It’s a B-movie through and through. It reminds me of the pacing in Married in Name Only, where you get the feeling the director was just trying to get home for dinner. It doesn't drag, and that’s a win in my book.
Is it perfect? Hardly. The dialogue is sometimes a bit *too* sharp, to the point where nobody actually talks like that in real life. But honestly? I don't care. It’s got a vibe. It’s not trying to lecture you. It’s just showing you two people making bad choices in very nice hats.
Also, the ending. I won't spoil it, but let’s just say it wraps up with a speed that borders on hysterical. One minute they’re in deep with the mob, and then, *poof*, things just resolve. It’s kind of lazy, but also kind of charming. Like a friend telling you a story and realizing they forgot half the details, so they just finish it by saying, "And then we left."
Watch it for the attitude. Don't watch it if you want to learn anything about how the law works. You’ll be disappointed. Grab a snack, enjoy the fast talk, and ignore the plot holes. 💼
