Summary
Faith Ebbing, a resolute young woman disenchanted by her father's recent marriage to a woman of ill repute, abandons the comforts of home to seek independence in the bustling city. There, she secures a modest clerical position, only to become ensnared in a desperate act: she pilfers five thousand dollars in Liberty Bonds, a sum she intends to settle a blackmailer's demand—Duroc, a shadowy figure threatening to expose her mother, Cordelia Ebbing. Cordelia, a once‑married wanderer who has traversed the Continent in pursuit of artistic fulfillment, discovers the theft and, bound by maternal devotion, sacrifices her own dignity to replace the missing bonds, thereby shielding Faith from scandal. The narrative unravels as layers of deceit and longing are peeled back, culminating in a poignant reconciliation: Cordelia reunites with Revere Wayne, a former admirer whose affection endured despite years of separation. The film weaves themes of filial piety, moral compromise, and the redemptive power of love into a tightly knit melodrama.
